When getting a tattoo in a language you’re not fluent in, the first rule is crystal clear: make sure you know what it says!
Arguably the bare minimum you should know before stepping into a tattoo studio, this Australian TikToker clearly missed the memo.
Amy Dickinson shared an emotional video with her 95,000+ followers, tearfully asking for help with her new body art, which she got while vacationing in Fiji. “I had no idea Fijians could be so harsh! Now I’m stuck with a tattoo, and I don’t even know what it means,” she lamented.
“So can someone please tell me what’s on my body?” she pleaded.
Turning the camera around, she tearfully revealed, “Okay, here’s my tattoo. What does it even mean?” The ink reads “Matanivola Levu,” etched on her upper thigh—thankfully in a spot where most people would likely never notice it.
Amy was visibly upset (TikTok/@amzdicko) as she reflected on her impulsive decision, attributing her mistake to being a “fun, spontaneous person.” In a follow-up TikTok, she admitted that it felt “so brat-coded” to get a tattoo in a foreign language—a phrase for the younger crowd.
Fortunately, with the help of her followers, she uncovered the true meaning behind her ink. One user revealed, “That means ‘capital letters’ in Fijian.” As a dedicated Google Translate user, I can confirm that’s accurate!
Another follower added, “That’s actually hilarious— it says ‘capital letters,’ but it’s all in lowercase. Brilliant!”
However, one commenter offered an alternative interpretation, saying, “In Fijian, ‘Big Book’ can also translate to someone having many stories to tell, symbolizing a life full of adventures.”
A fourth commenter echoed this sentiment, saying, “Matanivola levu means you’re like a big book, suggesting you have so many stories to share. It’s nothing bad, don’t worry!”
She’s shared the tattoo in multiple videos (TikTok/@amzdicko), and some even questioned whether it was real. In response, she posted another clip, saying she “wished” she was joking, but she’s now stuck with the ink for life.
Standing in front of a mirror, she lifted her shorts to reveal the two Fijian words. It’s a crucial lesson: always understand what you’re permanently inking on your body!
